History

1950

Lurik Prasojo, a name now resonating as one of Indonesia's most renowned producers of traditional fabric, has deep roots in Pedan, Klaten, Central Java Province. However, like many success stories, the journey of Lurik Prasojo was not always smooth. This story began in 1948 when a man named Mr. Soemo Hartono decided to start a Lurik weaving business with only three non-mechanized looms.

Lurik is, in essence, more than just a fabric. While consistently striving to be the best Lurik of its time, this fabric carries profound meaning in its patterns and colors, reflecting the rich culture and heritage of Indonesia.

1960s

Lurik Prasojo's business grew steadily until 1961, when Mr. Soemo Hartono made a bold decision to expand. He sold his beloved car to purchase a Suzuki Yamada textile machine from Japan. At that time, electricity was not available in Pedan, where Lurik Prasojo was established. The high-value machine had to be kept in Solo City, where there was electricity access, to ensure production could proceed.

However, Mr. Soemo Hartono did not stop at efforts to develop his business. He also fought to bring electricity to Pedan, submitting a request for the area to receive electricity supply in 1965. This initiative not only boosted the village's economy but also brought significant changes to the daily lives of Pedan residents.

1970s

Unlike many other Lurik producers who faded away in the 1970s, Lurik Prasojo and Mr. Soemo Hartono did not give up. Together with his son, Wahyu Suseno, they continued to strive for innovation. They understood the importance of keeping up with the times. Lurik Prasojo introduced unique patterns and, at that time, became pioneers of Lurik Ikat—a groundbreaking innovation that produced a fabric unlike any that had existed before.

In the 1990s, Lurik Prasojo experienced a resurgence. Lurik fabric became popular not only among the middle class but also among the upper class. In fact, during that time, the Governor of Central Java, Mr. Muhammad Ismail, officially endorsed the use of Lurik traditional attire for all civil servants (PNS) in the province. This initiative elevated Lurik beyond being just a symbol of Javanese culture; it became a national heritage recognized throughout Indonesia.

In 2006, Lurik Prasojo was passed down to Mr. Wahyu Suseno's daughter-in-law, Mrs. Maharani. Under her new leadership, Lurik Prasojo gained wider recognition nationwide. Its motifs expanded rapidly, and the company began producing fashion-based Lurik products. These items received tremendous acclaim, and Lurik Prasojo even participated in various international fashion events such as the London Fashion Show, Canada Fashion Show, and Japan Fashion Show.
